Whether sugar is more addictive than cocaine, nutritionists suggest that apart from causing acne, sugar has addictive properties. Hence, we need to avoid taking it frequently. While causing bad reactions to our body, sugar is also found to affect your skin conditions as well. Let’s explore more on 3 ways how sugar affects skin conditions.
1. Sugar cause skin damage by boost up acne, hyperpigmentation, and facial hair growth
Dr. Joshua Zeichner NY Dermatologist further added that “Foods with a high glycemic index, does not only cause acne breakouts but also may be associated with premature aging.” Aside from increasing the effects of aging by breaking down collagen, sugar also triggers acne breakouts which cause by the glycation process.
2. Sugar increases the skin damage through fine lines and wrinkles
As we get older, our skin tends to dry out and produce fine lines and wrinkles due to the decrease of collagen production. Apart from exposure to the sun and the environment, sugar is one of the factors that speed up the aging process and make your face look older than your real age. This process is called glycation. The inflammation process produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. Digested sugar permanently attaches to the skin collagen through a process known as glycation.
New York–based dermatologist, Dr. Whitney Bowe further explained, “Glycation is when sugar binds to other molecules in your body, such as protein and lipids. These sugars then resulted in two things. First, they stop your cells from functioning properly. Then, they create free radicals, which can further damage your cells.
As a result, the molecules in your skin that keep your complexion looking tight and young—namely, collagen and elastin—are no longer able to do their jobs. Furthermore, you become more vulnerable to environmental stressors such as UV light, pollution, and cigarette smoke.”
3. Sugar cause skin damage by triggering rosacea and eczema.
Not only cause significant chances on how your skin looks, but sugar is also found to trigger and worsen rosacea and eczema. According to the International Rosacea Foundation, high-calorie carbohydrate foods, such as sugar, pasta, and white bread, are found to trigger rosacea as well. Apart from spicy food, hot drinks, dairy products, refined sugar, and flour are also found to be associated to increase the triggers to rosacea and eczema.
